Germany’s Potato Market: Industrial Prices Hit €283/Tonne as Processors Chase Large Tubers

German processing potatoes are trading at roughly €220-283/t depending on variety, with Innovator at the top of the range; table potatoes hold at €260-300/t and a first storage surcharge is starting to appear.

Industrial potatoes suitable for pre-fried fries are trading at roughly €220–283 per tonne on the German market, with the Innovator variety commanding the top of that range. Fresh-table varieties hold a firm €260–300/t reference as the harvest nears completion, and a first storage surcharge is starting to appear.

Germany’s potato market is holding firm quotations at elevated levels for both fresh-consumption and processing potatoes. Industrial potatoes suitable for pre-fried fries are trading at about €22.00–23.30 per 100 kilos for the Fontane variety and €27.50–28.30 per 100 kilos for Innovator — equivalent to roughly €220–233/t and €275–283/t respectively. The gap between the two varieties underlines how much fry-processing suitability and caliber are worth in the current market.

Stronger demand for suitable processing lots. Industrial demand is concentrated on good-quality lots suitable for pre-fried fry production. The final price depends heavily on variety and on how well a lot suits long-cut strip production — a reminder that in the current market, caliber and fry quality are worth real money, while smaller or uneven material faces a much thinner market.

Firm prices for fresh consumption. Table varieties are reaching a reference band of roughly €26–30 per 100 kilos, equivalent to about €260–300 per tonne, across the main German growing regions.

Storage premium begins to be recognized. The fresh-potato harvest is approaching completion. As a larger share of production moves into storage, the market has begun to recognize a first storage surcharge of around €5 per 100 kilos (roughly €50/t) — an early signal that buyers expect supply to tighten through the winter months and are willing to pay to secure it. For storage operators and growers with good sheds, that surcharge is the first concrete return on the season’s careful curing and conditioning work.

The German readings fit the broader northwest-European picture this autumn: processors competing for suitable raw material after a season of uneven yields and weather-stressed sizing. With free-buy industrial potatoes at roughly €220–283/t and table stock at €260–300/t, the premium for quality and caliber is being priced openly into the market — and the first storage surcharges suggest sellers, not buyers, currently hold the stronger hand heading into winter.
