German potato consumer prices up 11.3% in September, Destatis says

Destatis: German potato consumer prices rose 11.3% in September 2026; producer prices for table potatoes were up 61.5% in August.

German consumer prices for potatoes were 11.3% higher in September 2026 than in September 2025, according to a press release from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) dated 15 October 2026. Prices for French fries and similar frozen products went the other way and were 4.7% lower year on year, Destatis reports.

Destatis also reported a much larger rise at the producer level. Producer prices for table potatoes were 61.5% higher in August 2026 than in August 2025. The office describes this as the strongest year-on-year increase since August 2023, when prices were up 114.6% against August 2022. For comparison, producer prices for agricultural products as a whole fell 7.0% in August 2026 year on year, while prices for plant products rose 12.3%, according to the release.

The harvest provides context. In its first harvest estimate of 24 September, Destatis put the preliminary 2026 potato harvest at 10.4 million tonnes, 24.8% below 2025, with planted area down 11.1% to 268,300 hectares. According to the 15 October release, the 2025 harvest was 13.9 million tonnes on 301,800 hectares, and yield is now expected at 38.9 tonnes per hectare against 46.0, a decline of 15.4%. Destatis says the lower yield is likely due mainly to the extreme heat and drought of this summer.

Destatis also cites preliminary figures from the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) that put Germany’s potato self-sufficiency rate at 145% in the 2024/25 marketing year. According to Destatis, a large share of potatoes and potato products is therefore exported.
