Adelaide / Melbourne / Moscow, 23 May 2025 – Potatoes News is proud to announce an upcoming video interview with Australian Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist Jemma O’Hanlon (BHlthSc Nutr & Diet, AdvAPD, GAICD) in partnership with Potatoes Australia Ltd.
Why potatoes?
During the interview, Jemma dismantles the old “potatoes make you gain weight” myth and explains why the crop is both an affordable energy source and a nutrient powerhouse, rich in vitamin C, several B-vitamins and potassium. She highlights the role of resistant starch—formed when potatoes are cooked and cooled—in feeding beneficial gut bacteria and helping to regulate blood-sugar response.
“Potatoes deliver long-lasting carbohydrates and gut-friendly fibre in one, and they cost just a fraction of many trending ‘super-foods,’” Jemma says in the interview.
The May-30 cooking demo
Building on the national Potato Power campaign, Potatoes Australia will host a live cooking demonstration with Jemma on Thursday, 30 May 2025. Viewers will learn simple, healthy dishes that showcase the versatility of potatoes—steamed, baked, or lightly roasted with extra-virgin olive oil. The finished video will be shared with Potatoes News audiences immediately after the event.
Potatoes Australia, the non-profit industry body formed to give Australian growers a single strong voice, sees International Potato Day as an opportunity to “celebrate the incredible versatility and nutritional value of potatoes.” Potatoes Australia has also launched a dedicated webpage where communities can list local potato-themed events and access free resources.
