French Potato Acreage Plunges Nearly 10% in 2026 as Oversupply and Geopolitical Uncertainty Force Major Correction
France will plant just 173,415 hectares of ware potatoes in 2026, a sharp 9.7% reduction from 2025’s historic high of 192,099 hectares – a cut of nearly 19,000 hectares, according to a joint study by the National Union of Potato Producers (UNPT) and the National Interprofessional Potato Committee (CNIPT). The contraction, the first of its scale after years of continuous expansion, is a direct response to persistent oversupply during the 2025/2026 campaign, which eroded grower profitability and left the market struggling to balance production with demand. The steepest reductions are concentrated in France’s northern heartland: Nord-Pas-de-Calais loses 7,582 hectares (-12%), Picardy sheds 4,814 hectares (-9%), and Centre-Val de Loire follows with a 10% decline. Only Alsace and Rhône-Alpes bucked the trend with modest increases of 10% and 30% respectively, while early-growing districts may have seen even steeper cuts than official estimates suggest.
Beyond the immediate market glut, the report cites a more uncertain economic and geopolitical climate that has prompted many growers – particularly those supplying the processing industry – to scale back and lengthen crop rotations as a risk-management strategy. The fresh-consumption sector is also reducing area, though less aggressively. Crucially, the final outcome of the 2026 campaign now hinges on summer weather, with early-season water deficits and high temperatures already threatening to limit yield potential. The authors warn that the adjustment, while necessary to rebalance the market, underscores a broader vulnerability: after years of relentless expansion, the French potato sector is entering a more volatile phase where profitability, climate stress, and global uncertainty must be navigated with greater caution. Whether the reduced acreage will stabilise prices or simply expose the industry to new supply-side shocks remains an open question as the summer unfolds.
