France: Fries World Championship Draws 70,000 as CNIPT Seeks Flexible Size Rules
Seventy thousand visitors at the Fries World Championship in Arras, as the CNIPT calls for flexible size rules after a summer of heatwaves.
The fourth Championnat du Monde de la Frite, held on Arras’s Grand’Place on 26 September, drew some 70,000 visitors, with the French potato interprofession CNIPT present to promote fresh potatoes.
After five heatwaves hit yields and tuber sizes this summer, the CNIPT has called for more flexible size specifications and a guide to the marketing rules so that every potato can find an outlet — a fight against waste driven by agronomic reality.
The campaign reflects a broader European trend: loosening cosmetic specifications for fresh produce when weather cuts the supply of perfect tubers, rather than letting edible crops go unharvested or unsold.

For growers, specification flexibility has direct economic value: tubers downgraded or rejected for size or appearance alone can represent a significant share of a heat-affected crop.
The festival setting at Arras gave the sector a stage to promote potatoes through tasting rather than lecturing.
