The European seed potato multiplication area across the six major production regions covered by ESPG data—the Netherlands, France, Germany, Scotland, Denmark, and Belgium—stands at 105,155 hectares in 2026, a decrease of 1,710 hectares (-1.6%) compared with the previous year. The Netherlands, France, and Germany together account for 81% of the total area, with the Netherlands remaining the largest producer at 40,811 hectares (-0.70%), followed by France at 23,825 hectares (-2.27%) and Germany at 20,540 hectares, the only top-three country to record growth (+0.44%). More pronounced declines were observed in Scotland (-5.39%), Denmark (-0.94%), and Belgium (-11.97%), which posted the steepest reduction among the six countries. These figures point to a modest overall contraction in European seed potato multiplication, though the trend varies considerably by country, and the reduced area may influence the availability of certified seed potatoes for future planting seasons.

The varietal landscape is also shifting. The ten most multiplied varieties now cover 32,201 hectares, representing 31% of the total area. Within this leading group, the four French fry varieties lost 1,338 hectares (-8.4%), while the two processing and export varieties declined by 237 hectares (-3.8%). By contrast, the three export varieties remained virtually stable, changing by just +0.01%. These divergent trends suggest that growers are adjusting their varietal choices in response to market demand and end-use requirements, with processing-oriented varieties losing ground while export-focused varieties hold steady.
