England: Potato Area Falls 8.2% to 82,000 Hectares, Defra June Survey Shows
The potato area in England fell by 8.2% to 82,000 hectares in 2026, according to Defra's June survey. Early potatoes fell by 14.0%. The UK potato price index was 17.6% lower in July than a year earlier.
England planted fewer potatoes in 2026. The area fell by 8.2% to 82,000 hectares, according to the June survey of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), published on 24 September 2026. The main crop area fell by 7.4%. The area of early potatoes fell by 14.0%.
The survey was sent to a sample of 38,000 commercial holdings. About 19,000 holdings replied, a response rate of 50%.
Potatoes were not the only crop to shrink. The total area of arable crops fell by 1.7% to 3.3 million hectares. Wheat fell by 1.8% to 1.5 million hectares. Oilseed rape moved the other way and rose by 35.5% to 276,000 hectares. The area of horticultural crops grew by 1.0% to 118,000 hectares.

Prices: lower than last year, but rising
On the same day Defra published its agricultural price indices for July 2026. The price index for potatoes stood at 124.6. This was 17.6% below July 2025. But the index jumped by 40.1% from June, when it stood at 88.9. The price index for all agricultural outputs was 3.5% lower than a year earlier.
The smaller area came before a difficult summer. Hot and dry weather in 2026 cut yields in many parts of Great Britain. The new area data give the base for the final crop estimate.
Why it matters
A smaller area plus lower yields means a tighter supply of British potatoes for the 2026/27 season. The sharp rise of the price index in July shows that the market has started to react. Still, in July prices were clearly below the level of a year earlier.
The survey also shows where land went: among the main arable crops, oilseed rape grew most in area. Packers and processors in England now face a smaller domestic crop. If they need more imports, they will buy from north-western Europe, where growers also expect a much smaller harvest this year.
