Egypt: Wholesale Potato Prices Hold at EGP 12–20 per kg at Obour Market

Potato prices at Egypt's main wholesale produce market in Obour were stable at EGP 12–20 per kilogram in the week to 21 September 2026, slightly below the EGP 12–22 range seen at the start of the month.

Potato prices at the Obour wholesale market, Egypt’s largest produce market on the outskirts of Cairo, held stable in the third week of September. According to daily price reports compiled by Masrawy from the market’s official price list, potatoes traded between EGP 12 and EGP 20 per kilogram on Monday, 21 September 2026, unchanged from the previous day. Cairo24 reported the same range on 20 September.

The range has narrowed slightly over the month. On 2 September potatoes were quoted at EGP 12–22 per kilogram after a rise of EGP 3; on 16 September the range was EGP 12–18. For comparison, on 21 September tomatoes traded at EGP 10–20 per kilogram and red onions at EGP 13–16.

Why it matters

September is a transition month for Egypt’s potato market: the stored summer crop is running down while growers prepare to plant the Nili (autumn) crop, and seed-potato imports for the next export season are being arranged. Stable wholesale prices at this point suggest that domestic supply is adequate, which matters both for food-price inflation and for the export-oriented sector, since Egypt is one of the largest exporters of fresh potatoes to the EU and the Middle East.
