Early Season New Potatoes from Southern Regions Arrive at Moscow’s Farmer Markets
Fresh new potatoes from the southern regions of Russia have made their first appearance of the season at Moscow’s weekend farmer markets. Farmers have brought the early harvest from Rostov Oblast, Krasnodar Krai, Dagestan, and Crimea, offering Muscovites and visitors a choice of several varieties, including “Gala,” “Riviera,” “Zhukovsky Early,” “Nevsky,” and “Udacha.” Unlike mature potatoes, these young root vegetables are distinguished by their thin skin, sweeter and more delicate flavor, and lower starch content, which makes them less caloric. They are also richer in vitamin C, contain B-group vitamins, and are packed with bioflavonoids—natural antioxidants that help protect blood vessels and slow down the aging process.
Cooking methods vary by variety: “Gala” and “Nevsky” hold their shape well even after prolonged boiling, while “Riviera” cooks faster and becomes almost creamy. Farmers recommend boiling new potatoes in their jackets to preserve both flavor and nutrients, and serving them with butter, fresh garlic, and dill or cilantro. They also advise against storing them in plastic bags, as this causes them to become damp and lose taste. Beyond boiling, these potatoes can be baked, lightly crushed, and pan-fried with garlic and herbs, then served with cheese, greens, mushrooms, or thick sour cream and mustard sauces. The Moscow farmer markets, where vendors are provided with free stalls and full equipment, guarantee quality through state veterinary inspections. The organizers also invite regional agricultural aggregators to cooperate, helping local producers reach the capital’s market and boost their region’s visibility.
