Dutch Fresh-Fry Quotes Rise to €35/100 kg as Export Demand for Agria Picks Up

The Dutch potato market showed its first notable price movement in weeks — and it came from the export channel rather than from domestic processing. According to the weekly PotatoNL reference, the indicative price for potatoes destined for fresh frying rose by €2.50 per 100 kg in week 43, landing in a band of €24–35 per 100 kg. The driver is growing interest from foreign buyers in Agria, the variety especially valued for fresh-cut fries.

The rise sets the fresh-fry segment apart from the rest of the Dutch market, which remains largely in a wait-and-see posture with few changes in values. Category I potatoes for industrial pre-fry production held at €20–28 per 100 kg. Varieties for fast-food pre-fries — among them Innovator and Markies — also kept their reference of €25–28 per 100 kg. Only the rounder varieties for regular pre-fry production moved, edging up €0.25 to a new band of €20–22.50 per 100 kg. In other words: three of four tracked categories flat, one niche decisively higher — a selective rather than a broad-based strengthening.

The timing of the Agria-driven uptick matters. Sales of potatoes delivered directly from the field are practically finished: in the southwest of the Netherlands and in Flevoland, most production has already been harvested and shipped to buyers. Some direct deliveries from the north of the country are expected to continue until the first week of November; after that, processors will begin drawing on the first lots held in storage. The market, in short, is changing hands — from growers’ fields to store managers — and the price signal arrived right at the handover. A strengthening export pull at exactly this moment suggests buyers are positioning early for a season in which European supply is widely expected to be tighter.

Despite the improvement for Agria and the fresh-fry segment, operators expect quotes for the main categories to remain relatively stable over the coming weeks — a forecast that itself reflects how thin current trading is. The market’s quiet tone reflects the unresolved tension of this campaign: smaller crops and reduced plantings across North-Western Europe argue for firmer prices, while buyers — as interviews with Belgian traders this week confirm — are first working through locally available potatoes before testing the international market.

For growers with good-quality lots in storage, the Agria signal is an encouraging one: export demand is alive, and it is attaching itself to specific, processing-fit varieties rather than to the market broadly. Variety choice made at planting is now visibly translating into price differentiation at sale — Agria’s premium over the flat categories is, in effect, the market paying for frying aptitude. For buyers, the flip side is equally clear: securing preferred varieties early is becoming more expensive precisely when overall volumes are thinner. How far that pull extends beyond the fresh-fry niche will become clearer once stored-potato trading gets properly underway in November.
