Contaminated Seasoning Triggers Nationwide Recall of Zapp’s and Dirty Potato Chips

Utz Quality Foods, a Pennsylvania-based snack manufacturer and subsidiary of Utz Brands, has voluntarily recalled select flavors of Zapp’s and Dirty potato chips due to potential salmonella contamination. The company was notified that a seasoning containing dry milk powder—sourced from California Dairies and supplied by a third party—may contain the pathogen. Although the affected seasoning batches tested negative for salmonella prior to use, Utz initiated the recall as a precautionary measure, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). No illnesses have been reported to date. The chips were distributed nationwide, and a full list of batch codes and expiration dates is available on the FDA’s website.

The recalled products include Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch (1.5 oz, 2.5 oz, and 8 oz), Dirty Salt and Vinegar (2 oz), Zapp’s Salt and Vinegar (1.5 oz, 60-count), Dirty Maui Onion (2 oz), Zapp’s Big Cheezy (2.5 oz and 8 oz), and Dirty Sour Cream and Onion (2 oz). Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals may include fever, diarrhea (possibly bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Consumers who purchased the recalled chips are advised to discard them immediately and not consume them.
