The 27th China Potato Congress, held in Weichang County, Hebei Province, in early August, was officially framed around “the potato industry and ecological agriculture”, with a programme dominated by Chinese breeding, crop protection and seed potato research. A parallel narrative came from Shandong-based processing equipment manufacturer Sensitar, whose sponsored release presents the event as a global summit and uses it to market complete lines for French fries, crisps and flakes.

The official picture

The China Potato Congress is organised annually by the Potato Committee of the Crop Science Society of China and has run under its current name since 2006, growing out of committee meetings first held in 1998.

According to a report by the Weichang County publicity department carried by Xinhua, the congress opened on 4 August, and the plenary featured more than ten scientists from national research institutes and leading universities, including Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Xie Hua’an. Six specialist sessions covered genetics and breeding, cultivation and crop protection, seed potato production, industry development, smart agriculture and a young scientists’ forum. Discussion centred on tuber development, dormancy control, low-impact pest and disease management and breeding for resistance.

An accompanying exhibition showed germplasm, virus-free planting material, smart farm machinery, storage equipment and processed products. County authorities also staged an investment promotion session, openly seeking projects to extend local processing capacity.

Weichang is one of China’s major potato counties. It has served as a national seed potato base since 1979 and was designated “China’s Hometown of Potatoes” in 1999. Its stable potato area exceeds 650,000 mu (around 43,300 hectares; one mu is roughly 0.067 ha), and the county values its full potato chain at more than CNY 3.5 billion.

The Sensitar version

The article distributed via PotatoPro lists Shandong Sensitar Industrial Equipment Co Ltd as its source and appears alongside the company’s sponsored product listings. It states that the congress drew over 1,000 professionals from more than 30 countries and regions, hosted nine major forums and completed a transformation from a domestic event into a globally influential summit. Sensitar describes itself as the congress’s core global technical partner.

These figures do not appear in official Chinese reports, which describe six sessions and make no reference to international participation; Sensitar’s partner status is likewise stated only by the company.

The company showcased automated lines covering washing, peeling, cutting, blanching, frying, seasoning and packaging. It says the equipment uses food-grade SUS304 stainless steel with Schneider and Siemens control systems, and offers turnkey factory planning, training and after-sales service. Its claims on energy use, raw material losses and product consistency have not been independently tested.

Why processing matters to China

Scale is not new for the congress. The 26th edition in Wuxi County, Chongqing, in May 2025 attracted more than 800 delegates from across China and reported signed agreements worth CNY 584 million, confirming the event’s role as an investment platform as well as a scientific one.

Pressure on the fresh market helps explain the push towards processing. Xinhua Finance reported that Weichang’s wholesale price index averaged 12.88% lower year on year in the 2024/25 season, with stocks running above the previous year, as planting expansion outpaced growth in processing capacity. Research by Chinese institutes, reported by PotatoPro in December 2025, found that China’s processing sector is growing fast but still trails the world’s leading processors.

For international buyers, the takeaway is less a strategic “global turn” than a commercial one: Chinese machinery makers are actively seeking export markets for full-line processing solutions, and their performance claims warrant the same technical due diligence as any other supplier’s.
