60-second summary

A single northern Chinese region is becoming a serious fries exporter. Customs in Hohhot report that Inner Mongolia shipped 108,600 tonnes of frozen fries between January and August 2026, earning 834 million yuan. Shipments grew by a third in volume, while earnings rose by just over a fifth, so each tonne fetched less on average than a year ago. Buyers in more than 40 countries and regions now take the product, and customs says the region has led national growth in this category for three straight years. The customs office credits tailored rule briefings, a fast lane for cold-chain food and advice on origin rules. For competing exporters in Europe, North America and India, this means more low-priced supply in third markets. For suppliers of processing varieties, storage and processing lines, it signals demand in Inner Mongolia. The report gave no destination breakdown or unit prices, and the figures come from one official source only.

Frozen fries from Inner Mongolia are selling well abroad. The region exported 108,600 tonnes of frozen fries in the first eight months of 2026, according to Hohhot Customs data reported by Xinhua on 18 September.

The export value reached 834 million yuan. Volume was 33.25% higher than a year earlier. Value rose by 21.75%.

The products now reach more than 40 countries and regions, the report said. Growth in volume and value has led all Chinese regions for three years in a row, according to customs.

Value grows more slowly than volume

Export value rose more slowly than volume. That suggests a lower average price per tonne than last year. The report did not give a price per tonne or name the main destination markets.

Hohhot Customs said it supports exporters in several ways. It explains rules to each company in a tailored way. It runs a green channel for cold-chain food exports. It also advises firms on rules of origin, so they can use trade agreements. The goal is to help companies keep orders and open new markets, the customs office said.

A growing processing base

Inner Mongolia is one of the main potato regions in northern China. Wuchuan County and other areas are now harvesting the 2026 crop. New processing plants are also under construction in the region. This gives local fries makers a large raw material base close to the factories.

China has built up its frozen fries industry quickly in recent years. Earlier, the country imported much of its fries. Now, regional producers are shipping growing volumes abroad.

Why it matters

Chinese fries exports are becoming a real factor in world trade. Exporters from Europe, North America and India may meet this supply in third markets. Faster growth in volume than in value points to price competition. For seed and equipment suppliers, the growth of fries processing in Inner Mongolia means rising demand for processing varieties, storage and lines. The data cover one region only and come from a single customs report.
