Chile: Asterix Potatoes Sell at About CLP 23,500 per 25 kg Sack in Santiago, 30% Above Talca

ODEPA's wholesale bulletin for 21–25 September shows Asterix potatoes at CLP 23,500–23,718 per 25 kg sack in Santiago's Lo Valledor market, against CLP 18,000 in Talca.

Chile’s agricultural policy office ODEPA has published its weekly wholesale bulletin for 21 to 25 September 2026. It shows large price gaps for potatoes between markets and varieties. All prices are in Chilean pesos (CLP) per 25 kg sack.

At the Lo Valledor market in Santiago, the Asterix variety sold for CLP 23,591 on Monday, CLP 23,718 on Tuesday and CLP 23,500 on Friday, according to the ODEPA bulletin. That is about CLP 940 per kg. Traded volume of Asterix at Lo Valledor was 2,200 sacks on Monday, 3,900 on Tuesday and 2,600 on Friday.

  • Asterix at Femacal in La Calera: CLP 19,273 to 20,000 per sack.
  • Asterix at Macroferia in Talca: CLP 18,000 per sack, Monday to Thursday.
  • Patagonia at Lo Valledor: CLP 22,000 to 22,442 per sack; in Talca, CLP 17,000 to 18,000.
  • Rosara at Lo Valledor: about CLP 20,000 per sack; at Femacal, CLP 19,312 to 19,773.

Santiago pays more than the south

The gap between Santiago and Talca for Asterix was about 30% during the week. In the previous week, 14 to 18 September, Asterix at Lo Valledor traded between CLP 22,828 and CLP 24,519 per sack, Diario Frutícola reported from ODEPA data. Prices in Talca and Chillán were near CLP 720 per kg. Diario Frutícola wrote that “a single national average price for potatoes can be misleading,” because variety and market can change the price by more than 30%. That week had only four trading days, because 18 September was a national holiday.

Diario Frutícola said storage stocks and the change between varieties likely affect the prices, but the bulletin does not give stock data.

Why it matters

Price reports for Chile often use one national average. The ODEPA data show a different picture: growers in the central-south regions sell for much less per sack than buyers pay in Santiago.

For growers and traders, this means that the market and the variety matter as much as the national trend. A national average can hide a gap of several thousand pesos per sack, and freight to Santiago can be worth the cost.
