The upcoming World Potato Congress, slated for 2024, has unveiled an intriguing theme: “Old World Meets New.” This captivating theme not only celebrates the historical significance of potatoes as a culinary staple but also delves into the contemporary innovations and advancements transforming their cultivation and utilization.

Potatoes, originating from the Andes mountains in South America, have traversed centuries and continents, embedding themselves deeply in various cultures worldwide. From humble beginnings to global ubiquity, the potato’s journey mirrors the evolution of human civilization itself.

At the heart of the “Old World Meets New” theme lies a profound exploration of tradition and innovation. On one hand, it pays homage to the traditional methods of potato farming and consumption, honoring the heritage and wisdom passed down through generations. On the other hand, it spotlights the cutting-edge technologies and practices revolutionizing the potato industry, from precision agriculture and genetic engineering to sustainable packaging and distribution systems.

Moreover, the theme extends its embrace to the pressing issues of our time, including sustainability, climate change, cultural diversity, and demographic shifts. As the world grapples with these challenges, the potato industry stands at the forefront, adapting and innovating to ensure food security, environmental stewardship, and economic resilience.

Amidst this backdrop, Australia emerges as a compelling contributor to the global potato landscape. Despite facing numerous hurdles, Australian farmers and researchers are making significant strides in enhancing potato cultivation practices, driving efficiency, sustainability, and profitability.

As the World Potato Congress 2024 approaches, anticipation builds for the exchange of ideas, insights, and innovations that will shape the future of the potato industry. Abstract submissions are eagerly awaited, promising a diverse array of perspectives and experiences from around the globe.

In the vibrant city of Adelaide, delegates from every corner of the world will converge to celebrate the potato’s past, present, and future. Together, we will explore how the old intertwines with the new, creating a dynamic tapestry of tradition, innovation, and resilience in the ever-evolving world of potatoes.

Kind Regards,
