Blight Alert: Heatwave Fuels Potato Disease Threat in Private Farms
A worrying outbreak of late blight (Phytophthora) has been detected in private household plots across the region—and this is particularly concerning because these small-scale farms supply over 65% of the area’s potatoes. With many gardeners already reporting infected leaves, the hot weather that many had hoped would suppress the fungus has paradoxically accelerated its spread. One grower, Svetlana Kuzmina, discovered the telltale signs on her plants and is now rushing to apply fungicides, having lost her entire potato crop to the same disease last year. Without prompt treatment, the spores will move from foliage to stems and tubers, threatening to ruin a large share of the regional harvest.
However, experts stress that panic is premature. Inspections of large commercial farms by the Rosselkhozcenter (Agricultural Center) found no signs of blight, proving that timely preventive measures work. The mistake of private growers, officials note, was relying on the heat to kill the pathogen—when in fact, warm nights and humidity created ideal conditions for its development. The good news is that only early-stage symptoms have appeared so far; with immediate antifungal spraying, crop losses can be entirely avoided. The key is swift action, not despair.
