Autopilot Steers the Tractor, Not the Planter: What Precision Farming Still Lacks in Potato Planting

Parallel guidance systems are no longer a novelty. But in potato planting, especially on sloping fields, it becomes clear that an autopilot keeping the tractor on line and a planter actually following that line are not the same thing.

Three levels of accuracy

AgroSignal describes three options. When the operator corrects the course by hand, following prompts on a display, the error is around 30 cm. A steering assist unit, an electric drive mounted on the steering mechanism, brings it down to about 15 cm. An autopilot connected to the tractor’s hydraulic power steering keeps the error to a few centimetres.

Centimetre-level accuracy requires RTK corrections, which can reduce pass overlaps to 2.5 cm. There are two ways to receive them: from a network of fixed base stations, or from the farm’s own mobile station. Rostselmash estimated in 2023 that an annual network subscription costs about RUB 40,000 per machine. Any number of machines can use a farm-owned station within its range. According to the company, such equipment lasts 5–7 years, and for five machines a station works out 3–4 times cheaper than a subscription over that period. These figures come from a manufacturer that sells RTK stations itself.

Where the tractor autopilot stops

This detail is often overlooked at the point of purchase. A standard system steers the tractor along the line using the tractor’s own GNSS antenna. On a slope, a trailed implement can drift sideways, and a basic system cannot see it.

There are two classes of solutions to this problem. Passive implement guidance puts a separate GNSS antenna on the planter; when the implement drifts, the autopilot steers the tractor to pull it back on line. Trimble says its passive system reduces uncontrolled implement drift by more than 50% compared with tractor guidance alone. Active implement steering lets the implement steer itself, independently of the tractor. The manufacturer recommends this approach for row crops and repeatable passes, and specifically names potato planters.

Before buying a guidance system, farms should ask the dealer whether it supports implement control and what equipment the planter would need.

Why planting is more sensitive than spraying

In spraying, a few centimetres of drift means a small overlap or a missed strip. In potato planting, the same error fixes the field layout for the whole season: hilling, inter-row operations, and harvesting with a two-row harvester. The straighter the rows and guess rows, the cleaner the lifting, with fewer losses and less tuber damage. An error made on a slope in spring shows up at harvest in autumn.

What comes next: satellite guidance plus machine vision

In Russia, combining GNSS with machine vision is no longer an experiment. By October 2022, the Cognitive Agro Pilot system was running on more than 1,000 combines in 30 regions. In the first quarter of 2024, the company delivered 405 tractor kits, compared with 312 in the whole of 2023. The manufacturer says that without a satellite signal, the system can guide a tractor along an implement track or marker line to within 5 cm. Whether such systems solve the specific problem of trailed-planter drift on slopes is a question farms should put to manufacturers before buying.

Why it matters

A farm investing in precision agriculture for the coming season may capture only half the benefit if it stops at a tractor autopilot. In potato growing, planting accuracy determines the efficiency of every operation that follows. Implement drift compensation should therefore appear as a separate line in the payback calculation.
