Austria: Home-Grown Table Potatoes Unlikely to Cover Demand This Season as Prices Reach €32–35 per 100 kg
Austria's weekly potato market report says supply remains tight and that continuous supply with domestic table potatoes alone is now considered unrealistic.
Austria is unlikely to supply itself with home-grown table potatoes throughout the 2026/27 season, according to the weekly potato market report for calendar week 38 published by Bauernzeitung on 17 September.
The report says the supply situation remains tight and that continuous supply with Austrian table potatoes alone is now considered unrealistic. Lifting has progressed only hesitantly because of dry soils and high daytime temperatures, which make harvesting harder and raise the risk of damage to tubers.
Producer prices in Lower Austria stand at €32–35 per 100 kg, with more paid for very good lots. In Upper Austria the quoted price is €35 per 100 kg. The report expects a storage premium to be added once the harvest is complete.

For comparison, the report gives a German national average of €28–30 per 100 kg, described as stable, and notes regional wireworm damage in Germany linked to the drought. In the German state of Hesse, official producer prices have more than doubled year on year, potatoes.news reports separately.
The Austrian figures come from a single weekly market report. A similar assessment appeared in top agrar Austria on 16 September, and both appear to draw on the same agricultural chamber market data, so they are not treated here as independent confirmation.
The report does not give a harvest estimate or area figure for 2026. Without those, the size of the gap that imports will have to fill cannot yet be quantified.

Why it matters
If Austria has to import table potatoes for part of the season, it adds another buyer to a central European market that is already short. Packers and retailers there will compete for the same imported volumes as Germany and the Balkans, and the storage premium expected after harvest points to firm prices into winter.
