The small town of Bayburt, located in northeastern Turkey, is witnessing an exciting agricultural season as the potato harvest comes to an end. Known locally as “kartol,” potatoes have been grown on the family farm of Bilgehan Sancar in Çayırköprü village, where he has enjoyed a remarkably high yield this year, expected to reach between 30 to 40 tons. Compared to last year’s yield of around 8-10 tons, the increase this year is significant, signaling both growth and success for Sancar and his family farm.

A Commitment to Organic Farming

Sancar’s farming practices are based on a deep commitment to organic methods, avoiding chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This choice is not just about meeting market demand but is rooted in a strong belief in providing healthy, environmentally friendly products. Organic farming, as noted by experts like the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has been increasingly recognized for its sustainability, offering long-term benefits for soil health and biodiversity. Sancar’s adherence to organic principles means that his farm produces not only high yields but also nutritious, clean produce that meets consumer expectations for both quality and safety.

Field-to-Table Quality Control

What sets Sancar’s farm apart is his rigorous field-to-table quality control process. He personally conducts taste tests on his potatoes before they leave the farm. Sancar takes the extra step of cooking the freshly harvested potatoes in the field, using a traditional fire made from wood and grass. After cooking, his family tastes the potatoes to ensure they meet the highest standards before they are sold. Sancar explains, “I don’t sell what I wouldn’t eat myself. If I’m satisfied with the taste, then I know my customers will be too.” This hands-on approach to quality assurance has earned him a loyal customer base, who appreciate the authenticity and taste of his organic potatoes.

In 2023, research conducted by the International Potato Center emphasized the growing consumer demand for locally sourced, organic products, a trend that aligns perfectly with Sancar’s farming philosophy. As consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of food production, they are increasingly seeking out produce like Sancar’s that offers both flavor and sustainability.

A Family Affair: The Importance of Community and Hard Work

Sancar’s farm is a true example of family farming, with his children, spouse, and extended family all playing roles in the harvest. This model of farming, often referred to as small-scale or family farming, is vital not only to local economies but also to maintaining agricultural traditions. The family works together, with everyone involved in harvesting, sorting, and preparing the potatoes. Sancar emphasizes that the labor of love that goes into the farm’s operation contributes to the community spirit and work ethic that make their products unique. “We are all in this together, working hard, and we do it because we love it,” he shares.

Studies by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlight that family farms contribute to food security and rural development, making them crucial to the agricultural landscape of countries like Turkey. Sancar’s approach serves as an important reminder of the value of small-scale farming in creating both economic and social benefits for rural communities.

Economic Success and Consumer Trust

Sancar’s success is also marked by his ability to balance economic viability with his commitment to quality. The market price for his potatoes ranges from 10 to 25 Turkish Lira per kilogram, depending on the variety and size. While the price may vary, Sancar emphasizes the value of buying directly from the farm, where consumers can see the quality firsthand. He invites customers to visit the farm, where they can purchase fresh produce at competitive prices, bypassing the markup from larger markets.

The importance of this direct-to-consumer approach is underscored by the increasing consumer desire for traceable, sustainable food sources, as noted in a report by the World Economic Forum. By offering transparency and access to his farm, Sancar builds trust with his customers, ensuring that they are confident in the quality of the potatoes they purchase.

A Model for Sustainable Farming and Consumer Confidence

Bilgehan Sancar’s potato farm in Bayburt stands as a testament to the power of organic farming, family labor, and quality assurance. The increased yield this year, combined with a dedication to organic principles, has resulted in a bumper crop that not only supports the local community but also fosters trust and satisfaction among consumers. Sancar’s approach demonstrates that small-scale, family-run farms can thrive even in the face of larger industrial competitors by focusing on quality, sustainability, and community relationships.
