One of the main agricultural crops, potatoes, continues to be harvested in Georgia. The Akhalkalaki municipality is the leader in the production of tubers in the republic.
The harvest here in 2024 is decent, but farmers are seriously concerned about the low prices of their products. There are no serious problems with the sale, and resellers take tubers by trucks outside the country, including to Russia and Azerbaijan. But the selling prices for potatoes do not cover the cost of the crop.
During the harvesting period, the potato growers of the republic complain about the lack of labor. Seasonal workers are not easy to find, besides they constantly raise wages for their work. Producers in straitened financial circumstances are unable to pay more. But the risk of losing the harvest forces farmers to agree to all conditions.
In recent years, many Georgian farmers have called agriculture an extremely unprofitable business. However, there is usually no alternative to this occupation in the current economic conditions. Farmers are waiting for help from the state in the form of subsidies and preferential lending programs. But so far, local officials are in no hurry to develop appropriate support mechanisms.
