The Kurdistan Region’s Potato Boom: Export Potential and Agricultural Growth
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources has reported a significant surge in potato production in the Kurdistan Region, with an expected yield of over 650,000 tons this year. This figure far exceeds the annual domestic requirement of 100,000 tons, highlighting a major increase in production, particularly in the Nawkur plains.
The Nawkur plains alone are predicted to produce more than 300,000 tons of potatoes, creating a surplus that surpasses the region’s needs. This has prompted the Kurdistan government to actively seek markets and export opportunities for the excess production, with a focus on Gulf countries. Agricultural experts emphasize that exporting surplus produce not only aids in balancing supply and demand but also incentivizes farmers to expand and enhance their operations.
Since 2009, the Nawkur Plain has become the central hub for potato farming in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The area boasts over 3,000 hectares dedicated to potato cultivation annually, within the Bardarash district of Duhok province. The region’s potato output includes both industrial varieties, used in the production of chips and fingerlings, and edible varieties, of which there are approximately thirty types.
Potato planting in the Kurdistan Region occurs between February 1 and March 1, with harvesting beginning in early June. The conventional planting method involves placing roots at a depth of 20 cm and spacing them 25 cm apart, ensuring optimal growth conditions.
This unprecedented production increase opens new avenues for agricultural entrepreneurs, agronomists, plant protection managers, fertilizer manufacturers, and food industry specialists. The shift towards export-oriented farming requires collaboration across the agricultural sector to ensure quality control, efficient logistics, and market development.
Experts underline the importance of maintaining high standards in crop management and leveraging advanced agricultural technologies to sustain and further boost productivity. Additionally, the economic potential of the potato export market offers a promising opportunity for local farmers to diversify their income streams and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
