The exclusive UK distributor of a new method of preserving the color of potatoes stored in stores using ethylene is preparing for its first full season. This innovative approach promises to significantly improve potato storage results.
Biofresh Safestore received UK marketing rights for StoreGuard in November 2023 following CRD approval and is now actively promoting the approach to UK potato growers and processors based on impressive four years of trial data.
StoreGuard, manufactured by AgroFresh, uses 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to prevent fry discoloration that can sometimes occur in potatoes stored for processing when ethylene is used as a sprout inhibitor.
Innovative technology to improve potato storage
StoreGuard, which is priced on a cost-per-tonne basis, is applied early in the storage process, before ethylene treatment begins. StoreGuard dissolvable tablets are introduced into the activator solution in bags placed in the store, providing access to personnel 24 hours after treatment. This process not only preserves the color of the fry, but also protects the stored crop from “shock” due to ethylene injection, reduced transpiration rates, weight loss and storage aeration time.
“Combining SafeGuard with the ethylene-based Safestore system is a highly effective way of both inhibiting germination and counteracting the effect on fry color that some varieties may experience when treated with ethylene,” says Biofresh Safestore Ltd COO.
The use of 1-MCP ensures that there are no visible residues on potatoes, and commercial trial data conducted under pilot license in Europe highlight its benefits. Biofresh has also carried out trials in the UK, including at Winters Lane Storage, which recently hosted GB Potatoes’ SPOt Store day.
Proven results and industry approval
Simon Faulkner, an independent agronomist and director of SDF Agriculture, who has been involved in StoreGuard’s commercial trials for the past three years, was one of the speakers at the event. He highlighted the positive impact of StoreGuard on processing potato varieties, as well as the potential negative impact of ethylene on fry color.
“StoreGuard has been shown to protect certain processed potato varieties from the potential negative effects of ethylene on fry color. When applied before ethylene treatment, the benefits of StoreGuard typically last until April,” says Jeremy Barraclough.
StoreGuard represents a significant advancement in potato storage technology, offering UK potato growers and processors a reliable solution to preserve the color and overall quality of potatoes during storage. With proven test results in Europe and the UK, StoreGuard has the potential to become an important tool in the industry.
