Russian researchers at the Lorch Federal Research Centre for Potato have developed a new potato variety named ‘Alpha’, which boasts strong resistance to a wide range of diseases and pests. The announcement was made by Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) President Gennady Krasnikov during a general meeting of the academy. According to Krasnikov, the new mid-early table variety is highly resilient and reduces the need for chemical treatments, making it a promising breakthrough for sustainable agriculture.
The ‘Alpha’ variety is particularly valuable for regions with challenging growing conditions, including Karelia, where scientists at the RAS Karelian Research Centre are already propagating the potato in test tubes. As previously reported by the media outlet Respublika, Karelia’s climate makes it an ideal location for genetic experiments aimed at developing potatoes suited to northern environments. This innovation strengthens Russia’s food security and reduces dependence on foreign hybrids.
