Roll up our sleeves: potato production takes root in Tunceli

In the fertile landscapes of Ovacik and Khozat Tunceli districts, local farmers have begun a promising potato growing venture. This year’s potato farming, coordinated by the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Forestry, covers 80 hectares of land, demonstrating the region’s potential for agricultural development.

Early in the morning, dedicated farmers transport bags of seed potatoes to their fields. The cultivation process begins with plowing the land with tractors, followed by the application of manure to enrich the soil. Farmers then plant the potatoes using traditional methods: hoes, shovels, wheelbarrows, rakes and hand cultivators, highlighting the combination of modern machinery and ancient methods in their farming practices.

Mevsim işçileri, or seasonal workers, play a crucial role in this intensive process. In the fall, farmers will harvest potatoes, keeping some for personal use, and selling the surplus for profit. Among the participants is Nihat Firik, a farmer who moved to Tunceli from the Kestel district of Bursa. “I believe that Ovacik has exceptionally fertile soil for growing potatoes. This year we have planted an area of 3-4 decares and plan to continue expanding the cultivation every year,” Firik told AA. He emphasized the importance of well-cultivated and fertilized soil for successful potato growing.

Ali Haydar Eren, another local farmer from Konaklar village in Ovacik, shared his commitment to agricultural diversity. “I spend all four seasons here, constantly learning new cultures. This year I decided to focus on growing organic potatoes. My day starts at 7 am, with an hour break for lunch, and then I plant potatoes again,” Eren explained.

Potatoes grow well in sandy, humus-rich soils, so preparing and fertilizing the soil is critical to the success of the crop. According to Firik, “Cartol needs well-prepared soil because it grows by spreading its tubers underground.”

The initiative in Tunceli is part of a wider effort to revitalize the local agricultural sector, which is the main source of livelihood for many families in the region. The dedication of farmers and support from the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Forestry are aimed at making potato farming a staple agricultural product in Tunceli, offering new economic opportunities and promoting sustainable farming practices.
