In a transformative move for Central Europe’s potato farming, Solynta and Agris have united forces to introduce Hybrid True Potato Seeds (HTPS) to the region. The collaboration combines Solynta’s cutting-edge HTPS technology with Agris’ extensive plant raising facilities, marking a significant step forward in potato cultivation.
Advantages of Hybrid True Potato Seeds: The HTPS system deviates from traditional methods by growing hybrid potatoes from true seeds in a controlled environment, particularly in greenhouses. Experience gained from plantations in six different countries, including southern Greece, demonstrates promising autumn crops.
One of the key advantages is the accessibility of clean, quality starting material for potato crops. The traditional reliance on seed tubers faces challenges in both quality and quantity, making the HTPS system an attractive alternative.
Theologos Koufakis, Director of Research & Development at Agris, emphasizes the scalability and widespread application of the system: “With HTPS, every potato grower can have access to clean starting material at any place and any time.” Seeds are available year-round, eliminating storage issues and diseases from the logistical equation. Transportation becomes remarkably easy due to the lightweight nature of the material, requiring only 25 grams to plant an entire hectare.
Facilitated Distribution for Growers: Agris, leveraging its existing infrastructure, facilitates distribution by offering seedlings grown from hybrid true seeds through outlets and regular shipments across the region. Small potato growers particularly appreciate the concept, recognizing the potential for higher yields with the best-quality starting material.
Central European Market Impact: Operating since 1983 in Greece and five other Central European countries, Agris aims to be the first choice for customers by providing top-quality horticulture solutions. The introduction of hybrid potatoes from true potato seed is seen as an innovative solution with proven success worldwide.
Jos Aben, Solynta’s Business Development Manager, envisions a future where potato growers are less reliant on expensive seed tuber imports: “Through this business model, potato growers in this region have an excellent opportunity to increase their economic position and feed their communities.”
The collaboration between Solynta and Agris signifies a turning point in Central Europe’s potato farming. The adoption of Hybrid True Potato Seeds brings forth a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional methods. With improved yields, year-round availability, and reduced dependency on seed tuber imports, this partnership promises a brighter future for potato growers in the region.
