Nairobi, Kenya has been chosen as the location for the 2026 World Potato Congress, marking the first time this significant agricultural event will be held in sub-Saharan Africa. The congress aims to develop global partnerships for enhanced food systems, food security, and international trade. This article highlights the importance of potatoes in Kenya, the challenges faced by Africa in terms of food security, and the potential for the potato industry to contribute to poverty eradication and economic growth. It also emphasizes Kenya’s hospitality industry and attractions that make it an ideal destination for the event.

According to data from the National Potato Council of Kenya and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, potatoes are the second most important food crop in Kenya, following maize. They play a crucial role in ensuring food security, reducing poverty, and promoting economic development. However, Africa as a whole faces significant challenges in achieving food security due to rapid population growth. The potato industry has immense potential for improving yields, enhancing utilization, and increasing incomes throughout the value chain.

Hosting the World Potato Congress in Kenya is seen as a step towards ending extreme poverty in Africa and addressing issues of hunger and malnutrition. The congress will also provide valuable educational opportunities for promoting sustainable agriculture and contribute to inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and empowerment of youth and women in the sector.

Kenya’s well-developed hospitality industry, with its world-class hotels and conference facilities, makes it an ideal host for such a global event. The country boasts an advanced information and communication technology infrastructure and excellent connectivity in terms of sea, road, and air transport. The 2026 World Potato Congress is expected to attract over 1000 delegates, providing a boost to the local tourism economy.

In addition to the trade show and congress, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in pre-conference activities such as a golf tournament and networking reception. Post-conference activities include technical tours of large seed and potato growing operations, researchers, packers, and processors. Delegates can also explore Kenya’s national parks and witness the remarkable phenomenon of the world’s largest Wildebeest migration, known as the 8th Wonder of the World, which occurs in July and August.

The selection of Nairobi, Kenya as the host for the 2026 World Potato Congress is a significant milestone for the potato industry in Africa. It presents a platform for global collaboration, knowledge sharing, and partnerships that can drive sustainable food systems, enhance food security, and foster economic development. By showcasing Kenya’s agricultural potential, hospitality, and tourist attractions, this event will not only benefit the potato industry but also stimulate the local economy and promote Kenya as a premier destination for agricultural conferences and events.
