In a move to bolster its position as a global leader in agricultural technology, Munters AB has acquired Hotraco, a Dutch-based provider of high-end automation controllers and systems for agriculture. The acquisition is a key step in Munters’ strategy to develop a comprehensive digital ecosystem that enhances agricultural productivity, sustainability, and transparency across the food supply chain.

Strengthening Agri-Tech Capabilities with Automation Solutions

Hotraco is well-known for its premium automation systems used in agriculture, particularly in livestock management and crop storage. The company’s products, including controllers, sensors, and IoT solutions, are integral to creating more efficient farming environments by improving climate control, ventilation, and feeding systems. By adding Hotraco’s offerings to its portfolio, Munters is expanding its influence within the agri-food technology value chain, particularly in crop storage solutions, which is a new category for the company.

With Hotraco’s technology already installed in 45,000 controllers across 50 countries, Munters strengthens its European presence and improves its data-gathering capabilities. Hotraco’s systems will feed valuable data into Munters’ AI-driven analytics platform, which focuses on optimizing everything from resource usage to crop and animal welfare. According to Pia Brantgärde Linder, President of Munters’ FoodTech business unit, the acquisition supports Munters’ goal of developing a data-driven ecosystem to improve sustainability and yield in agriculture.

Digital Transformation in Agriculture

As the agriculture industry faces mounting challenges, such as climate change, resource scarcity, and the need for higher yields to feed a growing population, digital transformation is critical. Munters’ acquisition of Hotraco is a step toward creating a more data-centric, sustainable agricultural ecosystem.

By integrating IoT and smart software into farming operations, Munters and Hotraco aim to provide insights that drive optimization at every level of production, from farm to table. This technology will allow for real-time monitoring and adjustments, minimizing waste, reducing energy consumption, and ensuring optimal growing and storage conditions.

The potential for growth is significant. With Munters’ established network of global customers and Hotraco’s foothold in the European market, both companies are set to accelerate their development and expansion into new regions. Hotraco’s expertise in automation, combined with Munters’ digital strategy, offers a unique opportunity to revolutionize how farms and food producers manage their operations.

Expansion of Crop Storage and Global Growth Opportunities

One of the key areas where Munters will benefit from this acquisition is crop storage technology. Efficient crop storage is vital in reducing food loss and maintaining product quality across the supply chain. Hotraco’s systems, designed to optimize temperature, humidity, and ventilation, will complement Munters’ existing agricultural solutions and help improve food preservation across diverse climates and storage conditions.

Moreover, Hotraco’s potential for global growth is clear. The company’s size and established client base provide a strong foundation for expansion into new markets, both through existing channels and emerging regions. This move will also help Hotraco target high-value contracts in horticulture and crop storage, further contributing to the development of the agricultural sector worldwide.

Leadership and Vision for the Future

Berta Danielsdottir, CEO of Hotraco, will remain as Managing Director and join Munters’ Business Line Controller Management team, ensuring continuity and strong leadership. She emphasized that the decision to sell to Munters was driven by a shared vision for the future of agricultural technology, with a focus on long-term growth and innovation.

Danielsdottir noted, “Munters’ established reputation and robust network make them the perfect partner for Hotraco. I am excited to continue our journey together, where we can achieve even greater advancements in agricultural automation and crop storage technologies.”

The leadership at both Munters and Hotraco believe that the integration of their technologies will enable more efficient, sustainable farming practices that will not only improve yields but also enhance animal welfare and food safety.

Munters’ acquisition of Hotraco marks a significant leap forward in agricultural technology, particularly in the areas of automation, data integration, and crop storage. By creating a digital ecosystem that captures and analyzes real-time data, Munters aims to provide comprehensive solutions that optimize productivity, improve sustainability, and strengthen the global food supply chain. This strategic acquisition is poised to deliver substantial benefits for both large-scale producers and small family farms, leading to a more sustainable and efficient agricultural future.
