Jeju Agricultural Technology Institute Completes Supply of Hydroponic Seed Potatoes ‘Tamna’ and ‘Sessi’ for Spring 2026

The Jeju Agricultural Technology Institute (Director Kim Tae-gyeong) has completed the supply of hydroponically grown seed potatoes for the spring 2026 season, announcing the news on March 25. A total of 5.0 tonnes of the “Tamna” variety and 3.1 tonnes of “Sessi” (Earth) were distributed. The share of Tamna increased by 5% year-on-year, reflecting rising farmer demand. Tamna is a variety bred specifically for Jejudo’s growing conditions, featuring uniformly shaped tubers, excellent taste, and strong resistance to soil-borne diseases such as common scab.

The seed potatoes supplied this time are produced using advanced hydroponic systems that block external pathogens. This “blue chip” seed stock is virus-free and safe from serious diseases like dry rot (Fusarium). Hydroponic seed potatoes are widely preferred because they minimize pathogen introduction during subsequent soil cultivation, resulting in lower disease risk. Furthermore, this batch has passed both packaging tests and final seed inspections as “National Seed Resources,” receiving state-level certification that guarantees both quality and reliability simultaneously.
