Farmers of the Sairam district of the Turkestan region are completing the harvest of early varieties of potatoes. Despite the fact that this year farmers allocated 400 hectares less for early potatoes – 3,200 hectares, due to higher yields, the gross harvest is planned to be much higher than in the previous agricultural season, KazakhZerno.kz writes.

According to the information of the head of the regional department of entrepreneurship and agriculture E. Serikbaev, now on average 250-280 centners are produced from each hectare, while last year about 206 centners per hectare were received. To date, 55,310 tons of products have already been harvested, and it is planned to complete the harvest with a gross volume of 80,000 tons. In 2021, 75,219 tons of early potatoes were received.

Harvesting of potatoes of early varieties is being completed in the Turkestan region
A farmer from Karabulak F. Ibragimov, who sowed the Colombo potato variety on 30 acres of land, harvested nine tons of crops. Now, in the same field, he is preparing the ground for a second crop.

“This year, we have not yet experienced a shortage of irrigation water,” says Fazylzhan. – We hope that this will be the case until the end of the irrigation season. Now we want to take a chance and plant potatoes again, because this product is in great demand. It is readily purchased from us both in the northern regions of Kazakhstan and in Russia. So, I think we won’t be left behind.”

In general, farmers in the area prefer Dutch potato seeds. The largest potato fields are located in the rural districts of Karabulak, Kolkent, Kutarys, Mankent, Karasu. Most of the early potato harvest will be sent to Petropavlovsk, Pavlodar, Kostanay, Karaganda, Nur-Sultan, Turkestan, Shymkent and Almaty. The average selling price is one hundred tenge per kilogram.
