From Novice to Steward: A Young Farmer’s Take on Potato Growing in Russia’s Primorsky Region

In the Primorsky District, young farmer Daniil Zinovyev is making his mark in potato farming, though he’s only been at it for three years. Taking over the family business after his father’s passing, Zinovyev is currently harvesting early-season varieties like Primabel and Colombo, using a combine that sorts the crop on the go. Despite his relative inexperience, he actively learns from established neighbors, including renowned regional farmer Andrey Platonov. Zinovyev notes that even the same potato variety can yield dramatically different results depending on soil, weather, and care—a lesson this season has underscored, as drought and heavy rains have cut expectations to around 30 tons per hectare, down from last year’s impressive 44 tons. Still, he remains optimistic that the remaining crop has time to mature.

Zinovyev’s operation is already well-integrated into the local market: he supplies wholesale bases, has contracts with sanatoriums, sells at city fairs, and offers produce directly to residents. His story reflects both the challenges of erratic climate and the resilience of a new generation of farmers who combine hands-on learning, community ties, and a pragmatic approach to distribution. While this year’s yield may not break records, Zinovyev’s steady growth as a grower and businessman signals a promising future for small-scale agriculture in the region.
