Exploring Science-based Alternatives for Seed Potato Trials

#SeedPotatoTrials #DiseaseManagement #BiologicalControlAgents #DigitalTools #ClimateChange #EmergingDiseases #PlantHealth #Agriculture

According to the latest report by Potatoes USA, seed potato production in the United States decreased by 7.2% in 2021 due to drought and disease pressures. The report also highlighted the importance of seed health to ensure a healthy potato crop. One of the alternative solutions being explored is the use of biological control agents (BCAs) to manage diseases. BCAs are naturally occurring microorganisms that can suppress plant pathogens and boost plant growth. Researchers are currently studying different strains of BCAs and their effects on potato crops.

Another approach being studied is the use of digital tools to monitor plant health and detect diseases early on. This includes using remote sensing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to analyze plant data and predict disease outbreaks. For example, the PlantVillage Nuru app uses a smartphone camera to take images of leaves and diagnose plant diseases in real-time. This technology could help farmers identify diseases early on and prevent their spread.

As potato farmers face increasing challenges from climate change and emerging diseases, science-based solutions such as biological control agents and digital tools offer promising alternatives for disease management. With ongoing research and collaboration between farmers, agronomists, agricultural engineers, farm owners, and scientists, the potato industry can continue to thrive and provide nutritious food for consumers.
