Across Europe, on the fresh markets, growers have been pushing for a movement to avoid storage costs. Prices have been virtually unchanged but a small increase has been seen for the very best quality out-of-store over the last week.
Although there have been more reports of rots and sprouting and some supermarkets have opened earlier than planned, some producers in the UK are refusing to accept lower prices.
While there has been some progress in the last week, the conditions were extremely difficult. In Ireland, spud growers are still harvesting potatoes where it is possible. While some growers have finished, many still have a sizable amount of crops to lift, and some have just started. An estimated 25% of the maincrop may still need to be harvested. Although yield figures are still quite inconsistent, the quality of the food is excellent.
“Some quality issues such as soft rots are being reported due to waterlogged fields and this will probably continue and worsen as the season progresses,” the latest IFA report concludes.
