On January 11, 2023, total Canadian potato storage holdings were 5.84% higher than the 3-year average, primarily as a result of larger crops in the previous two years, although they were down slightly (-0.4%) from 2022 values for the same period.
Given the short spud crops in the US and the pull in Western Canada, demand is generally robust for both fresh and processed tubers, with little over 37% of inventories having been transported as per the most recent harvest statistics.
Only Alberta and Manitoba, both of which started with greater potato crops this season, have exhibited an increase in the number of potatoes in storage as of January 2023 as compared to January 2022 numbers alone.
British Columbia and Ontario, on the other hand, started this year’s harvest with smaller crops than usual, thus their inventories are lower than expected for this time of year.
