Agrico, supplier of certified seed potatoes, built an online news platform last November to support its buyers and growers with important knowledge and information.
This Agrico Potatoes platform will go live again from 25 March. The company shares its sustainable Next Generation on the Agricopotatoes platform .
Agrico Potato Service Africa, in Nakuru County, is one of the largest seed potato growers in the country and plans to end the biggest challenge Kenyan growers face: obtaining quality seed potatoes so that the yields and income can will be improved.
Agrico launched its first Next Generation variety, Carolus, in 2016. Now five years later, the Next Generation package has grown into a complete series of nine different varieties, all with a high Phytophthora resistance. The current series consists of Carolus, Alouette, Levante, Twinner, Twister, Nofy, Ardeche and the latest additions Beyonce and Jacky. These varieties contribute to sustainable cultivation, because they offer protection against the worst potato disease Phytophthora infestans with fewer resources.
“The added value of these sustainable varieties is becoming increasingly visible. Not only is the package expanding further with varieties for all different segments, but the volume of international cultivation is also increasing in volume. The total package of approximately 1,000 tons is thus growing. in 2018 to 15,000 tons of planned production of Dutch seed potatoes in 2021. Thanks to this growth, the results of these varieties are becoming increasingly visible and better. “
Thanks to the knowledge that is acquired and exchanged about all worldwide fields, Agrico sees the yield and demand for these varieties increasing more and more. The large industries are also purchasing these varieties more, because this is the way to sustainable use of natural resources for our future generations.
Beyonce
Due to the breadth of the Next Generation package, growers can choose to breed a number of varieties with different resistance genes in combination in order to spread the risk of crop loss. With the youngest variety Beyonce, which recently joined the variety list, Agrico now even has a variety that, depending on the prevailing Phytophthora pressure and virulence strains, can boast multiple defense mechanisms against late blight.
