In a month and a half, the harvest of 1,950 hectares of potatoes, with national seed, in the municipalities of Andrés Eloy Blanco (Sanare), Anzoátegui, Morán and Guarico in Lara state will culminate, said the director of the Federation of potato and Vegetable Producers of Venezuela (Fenaphort), Aldemaro Ortega Pinto.
They hope to harvest six million kilos of potatoes, to supply the country’s domestic consumption until the beginning of February, this added to that produced in the state of Merida.
“This sowing is of national seed, daughter of the imported from Canada”, clarified the director of the Federation.
The potato was sown on August 18 this year, in order to meet the demand of the decembrine season.
For the first week of December, producers expect to receive more seeds brought from Canada to restart the planting process in February, but this time the Aragua and Carabobo States will be part of the project.
In addition, Ortega assured that the potato harvest is guaranteed for the next 6 months.
Now the producers will be able to sow the potato when without relying on imports, since this first harvest will be saved “the second ” that is generated in Lara.
“This year we are going to bring Elite 1,2,3 seeds,” which means: “six seed cycles and six seed sows,” he explained.
The director of the Fenaphort pointed out that bringing good seed from Canada will give a better harvest, and thus the second seed will be of quality.
“This is our greatest contribution to the country and to the Venezuelan consumer, showing that we have to bet on national planting and BET less on imports because it takes a lot of time and limits us,” he said.
Finally the producer stated that the price of the potato will be lower than the current one; however, he admitted that there has been no strict control over the speculation of the intermediary.
