The 2024 organic potato season in Germany began on a positive note, with early planting in the Pfalz region thanks to ideal soil conditions and a mild spring. Klaus Amberger, director of EZG Pfälzer Grumbeere, notes that crops grew healthily, setting a strong foundation for the season. Josephine Hardt of Bio Kartoffel Erzeuger e.V. (BKE) adds that favorable weather across Germany allowed for normal crop development—a welcome change after two years of weather-related setbacks.

According to the German Organic Farmers Association (BÖLW), organic potato acreage has increased by 8% compared to 2023, reflecting growers’ confidence in market demand. Early yield projections suggest a 15-20% improvement over last year’s drought-affected harvest.

Summer Heat Poses Challenges

While spring conditions were ideal, the summer heat has tested organic potato farmers. Unlike conventional farming, organic systems rely on natural resilience, making crops more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. Amberger reports that Pfalz’s mild early summer helped, but other regions are implementing extra measures—such as mulching and optimized irrigation—to protect tubers during peak growth.

Hardt, who recently visited multiple BKE farms, emphasizes that maintaining tuber quality is the top priority. “The recent heatwave was far from ideal, but farmers are focusing on delivering a premium product,” she says. Research from the Thünen Institute suggests that organic potatoes under heat stress can lose 10-15% of yield potential, making proactive management crucial.

Balanced Optimism for 2024

The past two seasons were marred by erratic weather, leading to supply shortages and price volatility. However, 2024 brings cautious optimism. Hardt notes that expanded acreage and stable spring growth could improve availability, though final yields depend on the remaining growing period.

Amberger warns against premature conclusions: “We’re hopeful, but the main harvest will determine the real outcome.” The sector remains focused on storage quality to ensure year-round supply. If conditions hold, Germany could see its best organic potato harvest since 2021.

While challenges remain, the 2024 organic potato season shows promising signs of recovery. Farmers are adapting to weather extremes, and early indicators suggest better yields than in previous years. The key will be managing summer stresses to deliver high-quality, locally grown organic potatoes to the market.
