In a bid to revolutionize Rwanda’s potato sector, Agriterra Rwanda recently organized an intensive week-long training session in collaboration with Farmer Potato Academy (FPA)/Imbaraga Farmers Organization, EGSP, and SPF. The training, facilitated by Agripool expert Sander Giesen from the Netherlands, aimed to empower potato farmers with essential knowledge and practical skills crucial for enhancing seed potato production in the country.
Throughout the training, participants delved into various aspects of seed potato production, including agronomy, seed tuber health management, and factors impacting seed potato quality. Practical sessions covered everything from land preparation to post-harvest handling, emphasizing good soil management practices and innovative technologies applicable to seed potato cultivation.
The event culminated in a workshop bringing together key stakeholders from across Rwanda’s potato value chain, including governmental bodies and industry partners. Together, they discussed the challenges faced by potato farmers and proposed actionable recommendations for future interventions, ensuring the sustainable development of Rwanda’s potato sector.
