Buyers in Northern Europe are engaged in fierce competition for the limited supply of old-crop potatoes, leading to a surge in prices. Plantings in the region are estimated to be on par with or slightly higher than the previous year. This article provides insights into the latest developments in potato markets, including the growing demand for specific potato varieties, weather-related challenges, and the consequences for retail sales and consumption.

According to the latest report from the International Farmers Association (IFA), the completion of planting in Belgium has sparked a resurgence in export demand, resulting in intense competition among buyers vying for supplies. This renewed interest in the market has caused prices to rise once again. In the United Kingdom, despite the gradual drying up of soils, farmers are continuing to irrigate their crops. However, potato growth rates have been hampered by cold winds in coastal areas. This situation has heightened the demand for white potatoes with a high baker content, as buyers seek to secure their inventories. While there has been some resistance to the upper-end price levels, overall potato prices remain stable in the UK.

Meanwhile, in Ireland, recent weather conditions have had a dampening effect on potato retail sales and consumption. The past two weeks of weather have been unfavorable, leading to subdued activity in the potato market. In certain regions of the country, irrigation of early Rooster potatoes has commenced, and additional early Queens are expected to enter the market this week. Stocks of Premier and Home Guard varieties are depleting rapidly, while the peeling stock market remains robust, with prices exceeding EUR350/tonne. Notably, stocks of Rooster potatoes are extremely tight, and there may be a gap in the market before early Rooster becomes available.

The battle for limited supplies of old-crop potatoes in Northern Europe has resulted in higher prices, benefiting potato farmers and suppliers. The competition among buyers reflects the importance of securing sufficient inventories to meet consumer demand. However, the challenges posed by weather conditions, such as cold winds and drying soils, have impacted potato growth rates and affected retail sales and consumption in certain regions. The scarcity of specific potato varieties, particularly Rooster potatoes, underscores the need for careful market planning and management to ensure a consistent supply throughout the year.
