The Syracuse New Potato campaign is giving good results to Sicilian producers. “We are having a good season in terms of both production and quality”, confirms Dario Campisi, sales manager of Opac-Campisi , one of the main companies active in the production and trade of Syracuse New potatoes , to Italiafruit News .
“From the point of view of prices – he continues – this first part of the season was characterized by a rather constant trend , without the fluctuations that were found in other years”. The prices of the year, in addition to being fairly stable, stand at ” remunerative values ” according to Campisi.
“Like every year – he adds – the trade is suffering a little from the presence on the market of both Italian and French refrigerated products , available at lower prices than ours. In this period we are unfortunately uncomfortable for many operators in the potato sector, because our campaign lasts only three months . But the large-scale distribution groups that believed in the Syracuse Novella have already benefited from it, realizing a net increase in potato sales ”.
Opac Campisi will have the product available until the end of June. “This year we had drought and a particular climate that disadvantaged the maximum productivity of the plants. The yields per hectare are therefore discrete but not high. As regards the size we are in the normal range , with production ranging from 40 to 75 millimeters “.
The quality of the tubers is excellent. “The Syracusan Novella, in this phase, is the best potato of all for qualitative and above all aesthetic characteristics – Campisi is keen to underline – It is the only potato that is really almost without peel . It is white, clean and very beautiful to look at, also because it does not have any spots on the skin.
“Finally, our product stands out for its dry matter content and is suitable for all uses in the kitchen, even managing to cook in less time than refrigerated potatoes”.
