The export of American potato varieties experienced a noteworthy upswing from July to September 2023, marking a 10.8% increase in total value to USD 607 million. While the overall export volume saw a marginal uptick of 0.2%, this surge was fueled by diverse trends across different potato categories.

Fresh Potato Exports:
Fresh potato exports took center stage, witnessing a remarkable 10.4% increase in volume and a 10.1% rise in dollar value during the mentioned period. Notably, Mexico emerged as a key player with a staggering 48.8% surge in fresh potato imports, expanding the market by over 17,300 metric tons. However, Canada experienced a 3.3% decline, and Taiwan saw a 6% drop in fresh potato imports.

Frozen Potato Exports:
While the value of frozen potato exports soared by 11.6%, there was an 8.6% decrease in volume. The Philippines and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region contributed positively with a 5% and 3% increase in volume, respectively. Nevertheless, South Korea faced a 27% decline, Malaysia dropped by 45%, and Japan saw a 20% decrease in frozen potato imports.

Dehydrated Potato Exports:
Dehydrated potato exports showcased an 8.9% increase in value and a notable 13.3% rise in volume. Japan and Central America emerged as key markets, experiencing a 20% and 34% surge in volume, respectively. However, smaller export destinations like Taiwan (-75%) and Thailand (-38%) witnessed a decline in dehydrated potato imports.

Potato Chips and Seed Potato Exports:
While potato chips witnessed a 0.3% value increase, there was a 1.3% volume reduction. In contrast, seed potato exports demonstrated a robust performance, with a 10.7% increase in value and an impressive 25.0% rise in volume.

The 2023 potato export landscape unveils a dynamic scenario, with fresh potatoes leading the way and diverse trends shaping the overall market. Understanding these shifts is crucial for industry professionals to adapt strategies and seize opportunities in the evolving global potato trade.
