The export of American potato varieties experienced a noteworthy upswing from July to September 2023, marking a 10.8% increase in total value to USD 607 million. While the overall export volume saw a marginal uptick of 0.2%, this surge was fueled by diverse trends across different potato categories.
Fresh Potato Exports:
Fresh potato exports took center stage, witnessing a remarkable 10.4% increase in volume and a 10.1% rise in dollar value during the mentioned period. Notably, Mexico emerged as a key player with a staggering 48.8% surge in fresh potato imports, expanding the market by over 17,300 metric tons. However, Canada experienced a 3.3% decline, and Taiwan saw a 6% drop in fresh potato imports.
Frozen Potato Exports:
While the value of frozen potato exports soared by 11.6%, there was an 8.6% decrease in volume. The Philippines and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region contributed positively with a 5% and 3% increase in volume, respectively. Nevertheless, South Korea faced a 27% decline, Malaysia dropped by 45%, and Japan saw a 20% decrease in frozen potato imports.
Dehydrated Potato Exports:
Dehydrated potato exports showcased an 8.9% increase in value and a notable 13.3% rise in volume. Japan and Central America emerged as key markets, experiencing a 20% and 34% surge in volume, respectively. However, smaller export destinations like Taiwan (-75%) and Thailand (-38%) witnessed a decline in dehydrated potato imports.
Potato Chips and Seed Potato Exports:
While potato chips witnessed a 0.3% value increase, there was a 1.3% volume reduction. In contrast, seed potato exports demonstrated a robust performance, with a 10.7% increase in value and an impressive 25.0% rise in volume.
