In the heart of Rongkong, at a staggering altitude, lies a hidden treasure trove for potato cultivation. Ilyas Supriatna, a dedicated farmer from Jawa Barat, has transformed the landscapes of Kecamatan Rongkong in Kabupaten Luwu Utara over the past two years. His exceptional yield not only fulfills the local demand but also supplies the burgeoning capital of Kalimantan, the new seat of the nation (IKN). On September 23rd, the district head of Luwu Utara, Bupati Indah Putri Indriani, joined hands with Ilyas in the bountiful harvest.
Rongkong, with its elevation reaching 1,600 meters above sea level, offers a unique climate perfect for cultivating potatoes. The cold weather, characteristic of this region, provides an ideal environment for this staple crop. Ilyas Supriatna, who has dedicated his efforts to potato farming in this region, emphasizes the incredible potential that Rongkong holds. The swift growth cycle of potatoes, typically harvested within 80 to 100 days after planting, allows for multiple harvests in a year, significantly contributing to the farmer’s income.
Bupati Indah Putri Indriani, after partaking in the harvest, expressed her astonishment at the region’s potential. “The income from one hectare, around 50 million rupiahs net, can be harvested two to three times a year. I urge landowners, especially those in elevated areas, to venture into this opportunity. Potato cultivation requires minimal complex care and can thrive remarkably well here,” she shared enthusiastically.
Ilyas Supriatna, a native of Jawa Barat, emphasized the uniqueness of Rongkong’s climate. Unlike many European countries, where potato cultivation is limited to a single season due to varying weather conditions, Rongkong provides a conducive environment throughout the year. This consistency allows for continuous cultivation, setting it apart from many other regions globally. Ilyas, drawing on his experiences in different parts of Indonesia, highlights the adaptability of potatoes to the local climate, making it a profitable and sustainable choice for farmers.
Additionally, Ilyas has extended his expertise and assistance to the local community. He is readily available to guide and support fellow farmers in Rongkong who wish to embark on potato cultivation, emphasizing the simplicity and rewarding nature of this endeavor.
Rongkong’s agricultural marvel, under the diligent efforts of farmers like Ilyas Supriatna, stands as a testament to the untapped potential that many regions possess. The success story of potato cultivation in this elevated terrain not only ensures food security but also creates a robust economic foundation for the local community. As Bupati Indah Putri Indriani rightly pointed out, this endeavor not only promises financial gains but also requires minimal complexities, making it an accessible opportunity for all. The bountiful harvests in Rongkong serve as an inspiration, showcasing the transformative power of agriculture when coupled with the right knowledge, dedication, and favorable climatic conditions.
