Introducing a New Tradition in Idaho’s Storied Football Rivalry

The University of Idaho and Idaho State University have announced the official introduction of the Potato State Trophy, a new symbol of their annual football rivalry. This trophy will replace the retired Battle of the Domes Trophy, marking the beginning of a new era for these two esteemed institutions.

A Tribute to Idaho’s Potato Heritage

The Potato State Trophy, crafted from a piece of North Idaho Douglas Fir, features a large wooden potato as its centerpiece. The trophy’s design includes a metal cutout in the shape of Idaho, etched with the athletic logos of both universities over their respective locations. This unique piece was created and donated by longtime Vandal supporter Nick Davis, adding a personal touch to this new symbol of competition.

The introduction of the Potato State Trophy highlights the deep connection between Idaho and its renowned potato industry. Potatoes are a $4 billion industry in Idaho, supporting over 30,000 jobs and uniting the state in its agricultural heritage. The University of Idaho plays a crucial role in this industry, with its research and extension offices providing vital support.

Strengthening Rivalries and Traditions

The change to the Potato State Trophy follows the discontinuation of the Battle of the Domes Trophy after its sponsor adjusted their support in 2023. Idaho head coach Jason Eck had initially created a temporary version of the trophy, featuring a Mr. Potato Head mounted on the base of the old trophy. However, this temporary solution has now been replaced by a more permanent and meaningful design.

Both universities are eager to compete for this new trophy, which not only honors their athletic rivalry but also celebrates their shared agricultural heritage. Idaho State head coach Cody Hawkins, who has deep ties to the state, expressed his excitement about this new chapter in the rivalry, emphasizing the importance of tradition and competition in the Big Sky Conference.

Looking Forward

The University of Idaho and Idaho State University are set to continue their fierce competition on the football field, with the Potato State Trophy serving as a new symbol of their rivalry. The Vandals currently lead the series 32-13 all time, but the Bengals are determined to turn the tide in future games.

The introduction of the Potato State Trophy is a testament to the enduring spirit of competition and camaraderie between these two universities. As both teams prepare for the next game, the anticipation and excitement are palpable, promising a thrilling continuation of this storied rivalry.
