The Republic of Belarus ranks first in the world in terms of potato consumption per capita. Each resident of the country eats on average more than 178 kilograms of tubers per year, whereas the global figure is 33.5 kilograms.
About one million tons of potatoes are produced annually in agricultural organizations and peasant farms of the republic. And in the homesteads of the local population – about 3 million tons more.
In the structure of plantings, varieties of Belarusian selection occupy 70 percent of the area. The average yield in the republic is more than 30 tons per hectare.
The Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences for Potato and Fruit and Vegetable Growing operates in Belarus. The institution carries out activities in the field of breeding, variety renewal, potato production technology.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Belarus, in 2024, a crop harvest is expected in the country that exceeds the figures of the previous season. The volumes produced will be fully sufficient for self-sufficiency, and some of the products will traditionally be exported.
