The Dutch Arable Farming Union (NAV) has supported the FarmerFriendly quality mark. “It is the first time that a supermarket chain has been asked for a quality mark and now not a farmer,” says chairman Teun de Jong in his vlog.
With the quality mark, supermarkets can prove that they pay farmers a fair price, says De Jong. Because the price that farmers now receive for their products is far too low. “We can’t go on like this.” Supermarkets compete with the lowest price guarantee. “Strong farmers’ cooperatives cannot compete with that either. The farmer so often loses out in the chain. ”
A co-responsibility levy should be introduced, the NAV chairman believes. “In this way, citizens contribute to a better farm income through the supermarket.”
