In the dynamic landscape of modern agriculture, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a necessity. Companies like Simplot are leading the charge in integrating eco-friendly practices into their operations, demonstrating that responsible stewardship of the environment goes hand in hand with business success.

Simplot’s commitment to energy efficiency is exemplified by their 4Sight 2030 Goals, which aim for significant reductions in energy consumption, water usage, carbon emissions, and waste generation by 2030. One notable objective is to decrease energy intensity by 15% per ton of product globally—a target that underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable practices.

Recently, two of Simplot’s fertilizer plants—located in Helm, California, and Rock Springs, Wyoming—were recognized for their exceptional energy efficiency efforts, earning the prestigious 2023 ENERGY STAR® certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These plants play a crucial role in manufacturing fertilizer, a vital component for promoting robust crop growth and ensuring food security worldwide.

Simplot’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond the borders of the United States. In Canada, their Portage la Prairie Potato Processing Facility received Industry Certification for 2023 from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), further cementing the company’s dedication to energy efficiency on a global scale.

David Albright, Simplot AgriBusiness Energy Engineer, emphasizes the significance of these achievements, stating, “For Simplot to have three plants achieve this designation is a testament to our Company’s commitment to business sustainability and the health of the planet.” Albright highlights the installation of a solar array at the Helm plant, which generates approximately one-third of the facility’s annual electricity needs, showcasing Simplot’s innovative approach to renewable energy integration.

Don Strickler, Global Food Energy Engineer at Simplot, underscores the pivotal role of energy conservation in the company’s operations, stating, “Energy is one of the most critical components of running our global food business.” He emphasizes the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving substantial energy savings, a sentiment echoed by Simplot’s continued success in meeting and exceeding energy efficiency benchmarks.

Simplot’s achievements in energy efficiency not only contribute to cost savings and operational excellence but also align with broader environmental goals. Since 1992, initiatives like Energy Star have empowered businesses to enhance energy efficiency, resulting in significant cost savings and greenhouse gas reductions—a testament to the collective impact of sustainability-focused initiatives.

Simplot’s unwavering commitment to energy efficiency exemplifies the company’s dedication to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. By prioritizing energy conservation across its global operations, Simplot not only sets a benchmark for the agricultural industry but also reaffirms its role as a responsible corporate citizen.
