Leningrad Region: A Leader in Seed Potato Supply

The Leningrad Region has long been a key player in Russia’s agricultural sector, particularly in seed potato production. In 2024, local farms stored 16,000 tons of seed potatoes, which is twice the amount required to meet the region’s needs. This strategic move allows Leningrad farmers to supply high-quality planting material to other regions, supporting national food security.

According to official data, the region provides seed potatoes for nearly one-third of Russia, making it one of the most important potato-producing areas in the country. The preparation process is now in full swing, as farmers sort and treat potatoes to ensure disease-free and high-yield crops.

Why Seed Potato Preparation is Critical

Successful potato cultivation starts with proper seed preparation. In Leningrad Region, agricultural experts focus on the following key steps:

✔ Sorting and Selecting Tubers: Only healthy, disease-free potatoes are chosen for planting. Damaged or infected tubers are removed to prevent crop loss.
✔ Pre-Planting Treatment: Farmers apply fungicides and insecticides to protect seed potatoes from common threats like late blight, bacterial wilt, and nematodes.
✔ Storage and Transport: Proper storage at controlled temperatures prevents sprouting and decay, ensuring optimal planting conditions.

Russia’s Growing Demand for High-Quality Seed Potatoes

The demand for elite seed potatoes is rising in Russia due to the need for higher yields and disease-resistant varieties. The Leningrad Region has responded by increasing production and improving seed quality.

Key statistics:

  • Russia’s total potato production in 2023 was 19.3 million tons.
  • More than 70% of potato farms rely on high-quality seed potatoes to achieve stable yields.
  • The use of certified seed potatoes can increase yields by 15-30% compared to using non-certified or reused tubers.

Leningrad Region’s efforts in seed potato production are crucial for maintaining Russia’s potato supply. With advanced preparation techniques, strict quality control, and large-scale distribution, the region plays a key role in supporting farmers across the country. As demand for disease-resistant and high-yield potato varieties grows, investing in proper seed treatment and selection will remain essential for a successful harvest.
