Summary:
According to UN FAO data and World Potato Markets forecasts, the global potato crop reached a record 383.1 million tonnes in 2023. Production is expected to rise to 390 million tonnes in 2024. Despite these figures, the popularity of potatoes remains limited compared to other crops.
Production Achievements and Challenges
Growth in Yield and Area:
Potato production increased by 2.6% in 2023 due to a 1.7% rise in yields (to 22.8 tonnes/ha) and a 0.9% expansion in planting areas.
Top Producers:
- Asia: The region accounts for 204.4 million tonnes of potatoes (53% of global output). China and India remain dominant producers, with India surpassing 60 million tonnes for the first time.
- Europe: Production reached 100 million tonnes, despite a slight decline in planting areas.
- Africa: Record production of 29.9 million tonnes marked a 1.1% increase in output.
Export Success and New Records
China:
China continues to strengthen its position as a key exporter of processed potatoes. In November 2024, exports of frozen fries reached a record 24,178 tonnes, double the figure from the previous year.
Germany:
Exports of ware potatoes hit record volumes for the first four months of the season, totaling 889,341 tonnes (+28.5% compared to the previous year). Belgium and the Netherlands remain the primary buyers.
Potato Prices: Trends and Forecasts
Europe:
Potato prices in the EU are showing an upward trend. In January 2025, the average price for processed potatoes was €260/tonne, higher than at the end of 2024.
Spain:
Interest in early potato planting is growing in southern regions like Andalusia and Murcia. However, competition with Egyptian potatoes has intensified, prompting protests from local farmers.
Challenges for the Industry
- Declining Planting Areas:
Over the past decade, the global potato area has decreased by 9.3%, potentially limiting future production growth. - Competition from Other Crops:
Soybeans, corn, and wheat are growing faster in production and yield, drawing more attention from farmers. - Impact of Inflation:
Rising food prices in countries like Japan and France may dampen demand for potatoes, especially for processed products.
Conclusion: Key Takeaways and Outlook
The global potato industry is growing but must adapt to challenges, including climate change, competition from other crops, and economic fluctuations. For sustained success, the sector needs to invest in technology, improve logistics, and explore new export opportunities.
