Coordinated Efforts to Safeguard Antioquia’s Potato Crops
In a proactive move to protect the potato crops of Antioquia, various government and agricultural organizations are joining forces to prevent the spread of the devastating ‘purple tip’ disease. This collaboration includes the Secretaría de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural de Antioquia, the Ministry of Agriculture, Agrosavia, and the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA).
Threat of ‘Purple Tip’ Disease:
- Impact: ‘Purple tip’ disease can lead to losses of 10% to 100% of the harvest, severely affecting both yield and quality.
- Vector: The disease is spread by the insect known as paratrioza, which was reported by ICA in 2021 as being present in other parts of Colombia.
Current Situation:
- Presence in Nariño: The disease is currently affecting 28 municipalities in the Nariño department, causing significant economic damage.
- Symptoms: The disease manifests through symptoms such as plant stunting, stem swelling at leaf insertions, aerial tuber formation, purple discoloration of upper leaves, excessive stem growth, and brown discoloration of tubers, leading to market rejection.
Preventive Measures in Antioquia
To avoid the spread of ‘purple tip’ disease into Antioquia, a series of preventive actions are being implemented, focusing particularly on the regions of Oriente and Norte, where municipalities like La Unión and Santa Rosa de Osos are major potato producers.
Preventive Actions:
- Monitoring and Reporting: Farmers are urged to be vigilant and report any signs of the disease to relevant authorities such as ICA, Agrosavia, Fedepapa, Umatas, and municipal agricultural secretariats.
- Seed Caution: Producers are advised to be particularly cautious with seed use to prevent planting contaminated potatoes.
Extended Threat to Other Crops:
- Agrosavia has reported that the ‘purple tip’ problem is also emerging in tree tomato and goldenberry (uchuva) crops, indicating a broader agricultural risk.
Importance of Potato Production in Antioquia
According to the 2023 Agricultural Statistical Yearbook, Antioquia cultivated 10,438 hectares of potatoes, yielding 197,176 tons. The potato is not only a staple in the local diet but also crucial for food security and the rural economy.
Economic and Social Significance:
- Food Security: Potatoes are a key component of the basic food basket for Antioquian families.
- Economic Impact: The crop plays a vital role in the economy of the rural communities in the department.
Preventing the spread of ‘purple tip’ disease in Antioquia requires a concerted effort from farmers, agronomists, and agricultural authorities. By implementing rigorous preventive measures and maintaining vigilant monitoring, Antioquia aims to safeguard its potato crops and ensure the continued prosperity of its agricultural sector.
