PepsiCo’s Circular Approach to Sustainability in Potato Processing

In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, industries are compelled to reimagine traditional processes. Jim Andrew, Chief Sustainability Officer at PepsiCo, recently highlighted the importance of adopting innovative approaches to achieve sustainability goals. One such example comes from the PepsiCo Grodzisk Mazowiecki plant in Poland, where a circular model is transforming potato processing while reducing environmental impact.

Located near Warsaw, Poland, the PepsiCo Grodzisk Mazowiecki plant has embraced sustainability by implementing creative solutions to address energy consumption and waste management. A notable initiative involves harnessing heat generated during the potato frying process to provide heating for the entire plant and office spaces during cold winter months. This innovative approach not only reduces energy consumption but also minimizes waste by repurposing heat that would otherwise be lost.

During warmer seasons, the plant utilizes the captured heat to produce chilled air for air conditioning, further optimizing energy usage throughout the year. The site’s commitment to resource conservation is evident through initiatives such as recovering water released as steam from potato cooking and utilizing it for various processes, including cooling oil and potato peeling. This holistic approach aligns with PepsiCo’s sustainability goals and has earned the Grodzisk plant a silver certification for its resource conservation efforts.

Acknowledging the contributions of individuals like Krzysztof Molas and Łukasz Łącki, along with the entire team at the Grodzisk plant, Jim Andrew commends their dedication to embedding sustainability practices throughout the facility. The integration of PepsiCo’s sustainability framework, known as pep+, underscores the company’s commitment to driving positive environmental impact at every stage of production.

This case study serves as a testament to the potential of circularity in transforming industrial processes and advancing sustainability goals. By embracing innovation and resource efficiency, the PepsiCo Grodzisk Mazowiecki plant sets a compelling example for the potato processing industry and beyond.
