Potatoes USA Executive Board Engages with Red River Valley Growers

Insights Gained from North Dakota and Minnesota’s Potato Production Hub

Earlier this month, Potatoes USA’s executive committee embarked on a significant visit to the Red River Valley region, aiming to engage with local farmers, processors, and researchers. This visit was designed to understand the unique opportunities and challenges specific to potato production in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Highlights of the Visit

The five-day agenda was packed with valuable activities and discussions, providing the executive committee with comprehensive insights into the region’s potato industry.

  1. Research at North Dakota State University: The committee visited North Dakota State University to learn about groundbreaking potato breeding research. These efforts are crucial for developing new, resilient potato varieties that can thrive under the specific climatic and soil conditions of the Red River Valley.
  2. Farm Tours: Multiple farm tours were conducted, including visits to Hoverson Farms, Hall’s, and Black Gold Farms in North Dakota, as well as Dagen Heritage Farms, R.D. Offutt Farms, and Ewing Farms in Minnesota. These tours showcased the advanced farming techniques and technologies being implemented to enhance productivity and sustainability in potato farming.
  3. Industry Insights at Shearer’s Foods: The committee also visited Shearer’s Foods to explore the chipping industry. This visit included discussions on the latest innovations in potato processing and the market dynamics affecting the chipping sector.
  4. Evening Outreach Events: Evening events provided a platform for productive conversations between the executive committee and local growers. These interactions were instrumental in understanding the growers’ perspectives and addressing their concerns.

Regional Importance

The Red River Valley is a critical area for potato production in the United States. This region cultivates approximately 13% of the country’s potato acreage, producing 2.6 billion pounds of potatoes annually. The industry here is a significant employer, providing jobs for nearly 6,000 people across North Dakota and Minnesota.

Ongoing Engagement and Support

For the past three years, Potatoes USA’s executive board has made it a priority to visit various regions across the country. These visits are part of an ongoing effort to connect with growers, comprehend the challenges they face, and inform them about Potatoes USA’s initiatives to bolster potato demand. The Red River Valley visit reinforced the importance of these engagements, ensuring that the voices of local growers are heard and that their contributions to the industry are recognized and supported.
